Howling Cow Dairy Tour

A dairy tour at the NCSU Randleigh Dairy Heritage Museum.   The NC Association of Insurance Agents joined our office, Insurance and Risk Management for a dairy tour at the NCSU Randleigh Dairy Heritage Museum.

During our tour of the Heritage Museum and dairy farm our group learned about cow’s nutritional needs along with other fun facts, viewed the milking station equipment and collection area, saw their feeding and sleeping area (complete with large fans), and saw the cutest calves enjoying the sunny day.  We ended our tour at the Dairy Education Center and Creamery where everyone enjoyed their favorite kind of Howling Cow ice cream.  Plan a visit to the Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery and try your favorite ice cream!

We would like to extend a big thank you to Carl Hollifield for arranging the tour and to Alex Ives for being an awesome tour guide!!  The museum offers guided tours to organized groups of 10 or more!

Cow Fun Facts:

  • They spend around 5 hours a day eating, consuming about 100 lbs of feed. They drink around 25-50 gallons of water a day.
  • Holstein’s spots are like fingerprints, no two cows have the exact same pattern of spots!
  • Jersey cows produce less than the Holsteins.  Jersey Cows average 30 pounds and Holstein cows average 75 pounds of milk per day.
